The View From Tab Releases Episode 38

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. and WATERTOWN, Mass. — Jim Menick of Hendrick Hudson High School and Chris Palmer of Lexington High School have released the latest installment of their podcast, The View from Tab. (Jon Cruz of the Bronx High School of Science and Mike Bietz of Harvard-Westlake School were unavailable, but will return next week!)

In the thirty-eighth episode, now available for download, Menick and Palmer discuss award ceremonies. What should be in them? What shouldn’t be in them? When should they be held? (Cruz promises to return to this topic next week.)

Seventh Round Coin Flip?

NEW YORK, N.Y. — “Topic for Debate” features pertinent discussions of current debate practice and theory.

Today’s question is “administrative,” but perhaps has implications on in-round “fairness,” given what appears to be a strong perception of “neg bias.” Should tournaments that feature a seventh round — the TOC, Bronx Science’s New York City Invitational, the Glenbrooks, and so on — allow debaters to flip for sides in the seventh debate?

On some level, of course, the tabulation software is “flipping a coin” for the competitors to determine sides. Should the coin flip occur in rounds instead?
